Our Affiliates at the Ireland-Information
website offer these two reports on how to trace your Irish ancestors.
(We hope to have many more offers from these
people shortly... )
REPORT #1:
Irish Genealogy: How to start the search
for your Irish roots
This report is compiled to help you get started in tracing your
Irish family roots. The report includes details of the types of
records that need to be researched and how to go about researching
them, contact points for securing further information, using the
National Library of Ireland, a listing of Heritage Centres in
Ireland and a schedule of individuals and organisations that can
assist your research. The report is emailed in .rtf format (suitable
for MS Word and other word processors) and in .txt format (suitable
for almost all word processors) so that you can get started on
your investigation immediately. At only US$9 it represents tremendous
value. You can get it from the order form by clicking here.

The
National Archives were badly damaged around the time of independance
in 1922, for reasons which are hotly debated even today. When
researching in the national archives, make sure to follow the
proper protocols, and declare your intent to use any electronic
equipment beforehand. Photocopying is frowned upon, unless you
make prior arrangements, and you should even leave your walkman
& cellphone outside..!! The archives are also to be considered
copyrighted, and cannot be published without permission. And
Remember kids, don't colour in the pictures. :)
The archives are spread over a number of locations in Dublin,
including the reading rooms at Bishop Street, the Four Courts,
Dublin Castle, and this goes for census-type archives, as well
as general government archives. Military Archives are kept at
Cathal Brigha Barracks in Rathmines, Dublin, although I wouldn't
go there in a trenchcoat and dark glasses.
In
fact, if the National Archives were a niteclub... uh... never
mind.

Note for Australians: The Irish government gave microfilm/microfiche
versions of these archives to the Australian government in 1988,
so you may be able to search them there.

Cobh
formerly known as Queenstown ( Located about 7 miles
from Cork City )
|
|
Cobh
was the single largest point of emigration or deportation to the
USA, and Australia. Cobh has built a heritage centre, reliving
it's history in exhibition, from the pain of emigration, the famous
disasters like the Titanic which sailed from there on it's
fateful voyage. Victims of the WWI Lusitania ship which was torpedoed
in 1915, off the coast of County Cork, were buried here as well.
